Delivering Sustainable Retirement Villages for Ageing Australians
Australian Research Council Discovery Project (DP170101208)
Project timeframe: 2017–2020

This project explored innovative ways to deliver more sustainable retirement villages for older Australians. At a time when sustainable development was gaining increasing importance across industries and governments, the Australian retirement village sector was identified as relatively static and insufficiently responsive to changing environmental and social expectations.
The research examined how retirement villages could provide more sustainable living environments for senior citizens while also supporting future industry development. By investigating new approaches to planning, delivery, and sustainability in retirement living, the project contributed to improving the living environment of retirement villages and enhancing the quality of life of older Australians.
This project established an important foundation for the Centre’s continuing research on housing, ageing, sustainability, and the relationship between built environments and later-life wellbeing.
